Hey everyone, we’re back with more resources. I really need an assistant to handle these. I’ve been away working on two scripts for fellowships.
An article about me dropped. Read it here. Thanks again, Canvas Rebel.
Fellowship Season
- Paramount Writers Program due May 1st: You’ll need an original piece and a Spec script. The turnaround is short, but it’s due May 1st.
- Disney Creative Talent Development & Inclusion is opening up on May 4th at 9AM PST. Review the materials here.
- Austin Film Festival Script Competition Late deadline: May 27th.
- Final Draft Screenplay, Big Break Competition. Due June 29th
That’s all we got at the moment. It’s getting tight out here as many programs set to come out are on pause. But it’s okay; more to come. I’ll be sure to keep you posted. Check on the Writer’s Guild Foundation for the fellowship masterlist.
Resources
We got some new resources, this time. And we connected with them via TikTok!
- Director-y Film Networking App (APPS) / FEATURED
- Matter: Distribution Marketing (USEFUL TOOLS/CTA)
- The Professional Pen (USEFUL TOOLS/CTA)
We’ve moved Blkscript to Useful Tools/Call to Action, so you’ll see it there.
We’re going to add festivals, hopefully on an Airtable and tracker. That’s more of a Qtr 4 execution once all are over, so we can track all the festivals, competitions, and changes. It will be live on the site once the final composition is done. But for now, nominate your fellow filmmaker friends for the Oscar Micheaux Creative You Know Application.
Director-y is having a mixer this Friday in Atlanta! Let’s party!
Creative Spotlight
We’re doing a creative spotlight on IM Media Productions and overall creative talent, Monique Shaw.

Monique Shaw is an industry professional working to make a place for you and her in this business. She got her start in this business after a fateful encounter in Los Angeles, which led her to work on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. Soon after, she worked with Netflix, Lionsgate, HBO, Paramount, and 20th Century Fox. IM Media Productions is her way to help make content, create business roadmaps, and provide strategic direction for creatives in the business. In all senses of the word “collaboration,” Monique is here for us. She knows what time it is, do you? Check out her socials and connect. She’s happy to help, and by doing business with her, you’re closer to making your dreams come true. Ms. Shaw does it all, so let’s give it up for our creative mover and shaker. Taking a Dive and going on an Upward Spiral
I just completed two new scripts, adding to the crazy family of stories I have to tell. Upward Spiral, about a Black Jewish girl who attempts to commit suicide but then radically chooses happiness and joy. The first season follows her adopting stoicism; nonchalance meets hopecore. The Dive is about a couple in Encinitas, California, who, on very different paths, create opportunities for their community around them, whether it be the husband’s podcast or the wife’s newly owned restaurant.
The newest stories were developed this year, and they are on their way to some cool places. Stay tuned. If you’re interested in reading. Feel free to contact me via email!
Do you ever feel like you’re about to make a dive for something, good or bad? It’s the leap of faith we must take. It’s progression. Good or bad, it is not really black and white; it’s more, wherever the world wants to take you. For you to become you, it’s just a matter of the universe conspiring to make you happen. I leap, and wherever I land, there I am. And you’ll continue to make these leaps or dives. And the best part is, we’re buoyant, so you don’t have to know how to swim; just trust the process, learn your lessons, and gain wisdom.
Then comes the upward spiral. I think you just have to be crazy, just a bit. Don’t you think? There is delusion, confidence, and just a touch of crazy that meld together to make us unstoppable. It’s time to radically choose the path to our own greatness. I think the stories I got to tell recently helped me more than I could ever know. I’m on the path to something great.
